What it is
Based on the Food Sanitation Act, the Standards compile composition specifications, storage and manufacturing standards, and test methods for designated additives and others. To distribute a material as food-grade, conformance to the latest edition is the premise. Spec sheets commonly state “conforms to the Japanese Standards for Food Additives.”
How to read “spec compliance”
Compliance is confirmed by matching each item on the spec sheet / COA against the standard values. Key items include:
- Assay (purity / potency)
- Description (appearance, color, odor)
- Identification test
- Purity tests (heavy metals, arsenic, related substances)
- Loss on drying / residue on ignition, quantitation
Practical points for sourcing
Confirm conformance with your supplier and back it up with the spec sheet and COA. Note that applicable standards differ by use (food / pharmaceutical / feed). FONTIA’s catalog shows specifications and uses per ingredient; spec sheets are provided individually upon request.
